In a confusing, and by times lonely world, relationships are what keep us from coming apart at the seams.  Therapy can reconnect you with the most important relationship you’ll ever have—the one with yourself.

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO THERAPY

WHAT BRINGS YOU TO THERAPY

You’ve been working hard. And somehow, you find yourself at a point in your life you really never thought you’d ever be. How on Earth did you ever get here? How will you ever get to the other side of the river?

You’re in a bit of a mess and you don’t know where to start untangling the knots.

Everything happens for a reason, they say. You can learn from all your experiences, they say. What happens when you realize that that may be easy for someone else to say, but it may not necessarily be true? What is to be done?

HOW THERAPY CAN HELP

Antoine de St. Exupéry wrote, "Perhaps love is that gentle process of me leading you back to yourself."  Therapy can be like that, too: it is a process of helping you find that person that you have always been. It’s like a ribbon that runs through your life, showing you what was true about you at 5, 15, 25 and 45.

You may have lost hold of that ribbon at some point and now feel too old to start over, or too far in to begin again. But that isn’t true.

You aren’t trying to go back to somewhere, but you are moving forward.

Therapy can guide you into more productive and balanced thinking that allows you to move forward, past the wounds we all face to varying degrees.

THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

I take a psychodynamic and developmental approach to therapy.

WHAT THIS MEANS

In real terms, this means that I help you look at your past experiences—both painful and joyful—to help you make sense of why you find things coming out sideways all of a sudden.

HOW WE BEGIN

In my work with you, I will start by asking you what brought you in, and then we will look together at various parts of your past and present to get the lay of the land and begin the process of connecting the dots.

THE GOAL

To help you understand why what you’ve been doing—no matter how out of character—actually makes sense.  You aren’t crazy.  But you are suffering.  And it is needless to suffer pointlessly by yourself.

Couples Therapy

My approach to working with couples is that the three of us should always be in the room together, sharing all the same information.  I don’t keep secrets from partners but will support you to deliver difficult messages, as you need to.

Individual Therapy

I approach emotional problems with the idea that our past informs our present, and that even maladaptive coping is an honest attempt at trying to solve a problem we are facing. The key is in the non-judgmental understanding of ourselves.
